Jim Jannard is the founding father of the Oakley brand. This entrepreneur had no idea that his love for motorcycle sports would develop into a company that is well known as the premier sports brand around the globe. Jannard’s first product was not something you would see bearing the Oakley brand today: he developed new types of hand gripes for off-road motorcyclists. His rubber handgrips became popular so he added to spare motorcycle parts to his store and he continued with this line of work for nearly ten years. He soon noticed another problem that bike riders would continually run into, that of a lack of high quality motorcycle sunglasses. He got to work on this problem and the result was the very first pair of Oakley sports goggles.
Unlike the other items on the market, Jannard’s goggles were made from high-impact plastic, which made his goggles not only lightweight but also much safer than the standard glass goggles that were the most widely used at the time. Sales were slow at first but Jannard put together a team of young researchers and marketing gurus. The result was revolutionary eyewear; it combined both elements of goggles and sunglasses for the use by cyclists and skiers. By 1984, Oakley officially entered the sunglasses market sporting this new product. However, Oakley sunglasses did not take off until 1986 when cyclist Greg La Mond wore a pair of Oakley shades when he won the Tour de France.
Several world-class athletes such as Andre Agassi, Michael Jordon, and Cal Ripken, Jr. soon followed suit and sported Oakleys on and off their professional sports turf. Soon everyone knew what these sports stars saw in this brand; the high quality eyewear not only kept their vision clear and their eyes protected, it also looked great!
