I’VE had a music book sitting out for the last month, for the purpose of staring at a Tom Copi portrait of Miles Davis, photographed sometime in the early 1970s. Mr. Davis is onstage, wearing a lace-up suede Robin Hood shirt and enormous square Jackie O Sunglasses. He is scowling, apparently taking a momentary break between lung blasts, and holding his trumpet straight up.
