Triathlon Beginners – Equipment Needs
Triathlon Beginners – Equipment Needs
Well, you’ve decided to join the triathlon community. Your enthusiastic, possibly already possessing a reasonable level of fitness, maybe been involved in other sports in the past. Well, your not going anywhere without some basic equipment. I’ve provided a list of the basic equipment you are going to need. Remember, this doesn’t have to cost the earth, but it can if you want it to.
Triathlon Suits
These come as one or two piece items. They are a snug fit and are made of quick drying fabric, and come with padded shorts for the cycle part of your event. Changing your clothes more than you need to during the event would be a pain, and lose you time. Tri-Suits look like they are for the serious athlete, but even as a beginner, they’re going to make your event far less hassle. It makes the transitions between disciplines far simpler.
Depending on where you are going to be swimming, and for how long, a wetsuit is an optional piece of clothing. It’ll help you move through the water and provide some extra buoyancy, as well as the additional warmth factor. The temperature of the water, as well as the set down rules of the race will likely dictate whether you can wear a wetsuit or not.
Goggles
Whether your swimming event is taking place in a pool or in the ocean, goggles will protect your eyes. Get a pair that fit your facial features properly, a chap pair is only a few dollars, a good pair not that much more. I got a great pair of goggles for around $28, they don’t leak or hurt my head and are extremely adjustable.
The Bike
the bike is the most expensive part of the triathletes equipment. If you are just starting out, the bike you have in the shed may well suffice. People do triathlons on mountain bikes and old road bikes. If you want to get serious, zip down to your local bike store and see whats available. A road bike will certainly be preferable when you get into the longer distances. If you do make a purchase, do some research first, get the bike properly fitted for you. But to start out, use the one you already have, or borrow from a friend.
Helmet
GET ONE !! Don’t ride without it.
Bike Accessories
Once you get a decent road bike, you can consider clip-less pedals cycling shoes etc. Cycling gloves and Sunglasses will make it all more comfortable, you can get these as soon as you like.
Running Shoes
Get a good, well fitted pair of shoes designed for running. The risk of injuries may be reduced and you’ll feel more comfortable. There is a fair bit of debate surrounding running shoes and their real benefits. Read up on that if you are skeptical. I did, and I am.
The next article in this series will be about actually getting stuck into your sport. See you then.
